Part of the CT State Stamp Series, this letterbox is for New London County and can be found in Bluff Point State Park.
Directions to Bluff Point:
From I-95, take exit 88. At the end of the exit ramp, go south on Rt. 117 to it's end where it joins with Rt. 1 at a stoplight. At the stoplight take a right and head west on Rt. 1. At the next stoplight, take a left. Following this road will lead you right into Bluff Point State Park. You will go under a small bridge as you enter the park. Follow the gravel road to the parking area.
Clues:
From the parking area, you will see a green metal gate at the entrance to the trails. As you pass the gate, take the gravel trail straight ahead, going between two signboards. Shortly up the path you will come to a fork in the trail. Take the path to the left, which is less travelled. You will proceed up a modest incline (not hard to walk or bike...). Just before the trail flattens out again, look for a large boulder on your left. Up the trail a bit further on the right there is another big rock that is broken such that it looks like a chair. You're on the right track! Now, up a bit futher, just before a twisted, fallen oak on the right, there is a trail to the left. It is unmarked, but well worn. Follow this trail. It will twist and turn a bit before straightening out. When the trail straightens out you should look for three large boulders on your left. They decrease in size from largest to smallest. Once you are past the smallest of the three, look almost immediately to your left just off the trail and you will see a clump of trees with two cut off stumps in the middle. From this spot, walk approximately 37 steps (I have a smaller gait) and you'll step on a flat rock right on the trail. On your left will be a huge boulder with a flat rock in front of it. Stand on the flat rock on the trail and take a compass reading of 21 degrees, at which you will see a thin cherry tree growing from the back of the flat rock. Find the New London County stamp in the crevice in front of the cherry tree, just to the left.
