Why Diaz Chemical?
On Jan. 5, 2002 the Diaz Chemical Corp. plant in Holley released toluene, steam and a rare chemical, 2-chloro-6-fluorophenol into the surrounding neighborhood forcing families to move out.
Several of the 16 or more families displaced by the spill have not returned to their homes, citing health worries.
2-chloro-6-fluorophenol is not considered a poison but hasn’t been studied thoroughly by the industry because it is a relatively new material, the company said. (Although it is a solid at room temperature and is not water soluble -- this stuff stuck to everything and everyone it landed on and would not wash off. But why be worried? Well, I wouldn't want it on me!)
About 75 gallons of the chemical were released into the air after pressure built up in a vessel and a release valve blew. Residents who were exposed said they suffered nausea, breathing difficulties, skin burns, eye and skin irritation, and loss of appetite.
From route 31 turn onto White Street, follow White Street to the Erie Canal lift bridge.
Park in the lot before the bridge.
Begin at the marker for the Andrew Cuomo Canalway Trail.
Follow the path to the right of the marker.
Enjoy the Saltport Pond.
Continue to follow the path past the playground.
Be watchful for the grassy path which runs behind the evergreens in the rocks.
Follow the path up into the trees.
Watch to the left for another path which runs along side the one you are on.
When the paths meet take the path on the left back in the direction from which you came.
About 15 Onion Steps down that path you will see a fungusy fallen tree. Carefully examine the crotch at the back of the tree.
Be on the lookout for 2-chloro-6-fluorophenol.
Toxic Series: (Collect them all!)
#1 = Lyme Disease Hitchhiker
#2 = West Nile Virus Hitchhiker
#3 = Diaz Chemical
#4 = Love Canal
