(They have done so much trail work and there have been so many changes over the years that these clues are REALLY outdated. I'm afraid even I can't find my boxes following these clues. I'll leave this up for hardy souls, who enjoy a good challenge. Some of the boxes were found in October of 2007.)
The Mr. (or Ms.) Potato Head boxes are located in the Linekin Preserve, a 94.6 acre parcel of land on Route 96 in East Boothbay. The get to Linekin Preserve Take Route 96 from Route 27 in Boothbay Harbor and follow for 3.8 miles. The parking area is on the left, marked by a small white sign. If you'd like, stop at the East Boothbay General Store for snacks and drinks. The preserve is about 1.2 miles from the General Store.
At the parking area, pick up a trail map at the kiosk. While not necessary, it will be helpful. This trail is well marked and posted with maps every so often, so if there are no trail maps don't worry!
This series is great for kids, or those of you who are kids at heart. It is a longish walk (2.1 miles) if you do the whole River Loop, so if you do this with kids bring snacks and drinks. Bring your wellies too, if you come in the spring. The trails are very muddy!
Also, bring markers. I've put ink pads in the boxes, but I suggest markers too, so you have a whole range of colors. Much more fun!!
The clues:
Start on your way along the white blazed trail. Walk a ways to the trail intersection. You will see a wooden sign posted with signs that say "Rt. 96" and "Shore Loop Trail." Follow the sign for Shore Loop Trail. Do not go right! Just stay straight on the trail. A short walk ahead you will see a huge rock formation on your right. Walk over to it.
On the far right hand side you'll see a small downed tree. Examine the root end for Box #1-The Potato.
Return to the trail and continue on your way. Soon you will see a seven trunked tree on the right, just off the trail. Look left, and walk up the small hill until you see a tree with a trunk like an L. Face this tree and look left at the small rocks. Search there and you will find Box #2- The Eyes. And don't worry! I didn't forget the angry eyes!
Return to the trail. You will soon come to a series of 5 wooden boardwalks. Cross them and walk to the posted map.
*You now have a choice of whether to take the yellow blazed trail or continue on the white trail. If you'd like to do the whole loop, you can grab the next box quickly and backtrack to the white blazed trail, then pick up the letterbox later. It is a gorgeous walk, with great vistas of the Damariscotta River. The white blazed trail from here does get quite steep in some places, so the very young may find it difficult.*
Back to the clues- Choose the yellow blazed trail. Follow the trail until the fourth blaze. Look left. Do you see that huge rock? Walk to the back, on the left hand side, and look on the grund under the overhang. Under leaves you will find box #3- The Mouths.
Follow the yellow trail until you come to the intersection with the white blazed trail on the right side of the River Loop. Turn right and follow the white blazes. You will soon come to a little hill. Walk over it and look for a 4 trunked tree on your right, just off the trail. Start counting blazes from here.
Count 14 white blazes. Do you see a BIG leaning pine tree to your right? Walk to it and look straight past it. Directly ahead is a twin trunked tree at 9 paces. Under a pile of sticks and leaves you will find Box #4- The Noses. My daughter carved one of the noses! Rehide this box well and head back to the trail.
Continue on the white blazed trail, crossing a little river. You're almost done, but now might be a nice time for a snack. One box is waiting and you need your energy!
Keep going. The trail is a bit more rugged now, but not too bad. You will come across another map and a wooden sign pointing to Rt. 96. Follow that arrow! Soon you will cross another small river and see another wooden sign up the hill. Follow the arrow that points to Rt. 96.
When you get to the intersection with the white blazed trail, turn left and head back toward the parking lot. At the second blaze (or so...), look right. (You'll see a huge uprooted tree to your left) See that big pile of rocks? Walk up to it. You'll see a small stump covered with moss. Stand in front of the stump and stare straight ahead and think like a letterboxer! You shouldn't have to displace any stones here, just use your eyes. This is Box #5, The Accessories.
Back to the trail and the parking lot is just ahead! Congratulations!! You have found Mr. (or Ms.) Potato Head! Hope you had fun!!!
