NOTE: reported missing 9/12
This hike is about 5 miles roundtrip with lots of ups and downs, not for the faint of heart. The area is a wonderful place to look for birds including roadrunners, blue grosbeaks, lazuli buntings and those cute little black phoebes. You may also be lucky enough to see a rattlesnake or two.
To the trailhead: From Highway 101/Ventura Freeway in Newbury Park, exit on Wendy Drive. Drive 2.5 miles south to Lynn Road and turn right. Continue a mile or so, then just past Reino road turn left on Via Goleta into Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa Park on the left side of the road. Park near the restrooms, .7 miles beyond the entrance.
To the Letterbox: Head towards the Visitor Center, veering right immediately after crossing the bridge. The trail wends across the open grassland and continues upwards towards the Danielson Monument. When you come down to the stream, go left and cross the streambed. Bear left at a trail marker pointing towards the old cabin site. BEWARE! This area has poison oak all over the place.
Once you reach the cabin, warm your hands at the hearth. Peace will be waiting for you at twelve degrees, acompanied by Love and Joy. Phoebe waits at forty degrees beside what once was three but now is two.
