Potomac Bear Letterbox -- missing
carving by Poison Ivy, placement by Lady Prisspott
Go to the tiny park where Rattlesnake Run/Town Run drains into the
Potomac
Shepherdstown was founded because of it's abundant water power. Rattlesnake Run or the Town Run runs through the center of town, under and through several buildings. The Town Run powered several mills making Shepherdstown an early industrial town. One of the old mills has been restored and is a private residence. The remains of other mills can be seen just up from the park.
Begin walking along the path downriver. From the middle of the bridge the short hike is approximately 239 footfalls. (this distance is not crucial but will help reassure you)
You will encounter IN THIS ORDER:
A house close to the edge of the cliff that looks down upon you from above
right.
A large tree on the left of the path
Two large trees about 2 ft apart on the left of the path
Stand between the two large trees and take a compass reading of 200
degrees.
That should point you to a large two trunk tree on the hill that
cradles
a rock between the 2 trunks .
Go around behind that tree and examine that rock for the Potomac Bear.
Terrain can be rugged; not intented for evening wear and pumps.
