This letterbox is planted for Gwen, but once she finds it then it becomes fair game.

The box is near the Bridge that crosses the South Fork of the Kern near Weldon if you are arriving from the Walker Pass area. If coming from Lake Isabella via the Kern Canyon, stay on freeway as it passes Lake Isabella and drive around the Lake passing through Mt. Mesa until you come to the "Welcome Sign" at the "T" intersection. If you pass the Onyx store you have gone too far.

From Kernville, take Sierra Highway towards 178, past the airport and drive around the upper part of the lake until you get to the bridge over the South Fork of the Kern River. Park near the bridge and take the Kern River Preserve trail on the east side of the road. Pass by a large square rock on your left then take the trail uphill. There are some Tubatulabal(local Indians) grind holes in some rocks near the square rock. Always stay on the trail to the left . Pass through some boulders and once through you will find a large slanting rock slab ahead of you. Along one of the length wise dirt filled cracks on the slab closest to you there will be a 4’ X 3’ rounded boulder sitting there all alone. The valentines can be found on the river side of this boulder.

Caution: The slab is somewhat precarious so wear good shoes that are non slip. The final retrieve is not for small children. It looks more difficult than it really is, but if take your time and you should be just fine.
