____174Yrs.Ago____
Once upon a time, there was a sea captain, who fell in love with a beautiful lady name Lydia, and they were married. His name was Captain Erastus Williams. In 1827, the Captain realized that if he was to live with his beautiful bride, he would have to give up the sea. In turn he bought the huge West Farm on the Norwich/Franklin line. He also established a factory, and then he built a stone villiage around that factory. The villiage of Yantic was born.
The Captain's son, Winslow Williams developed the Yantic Fire Department in 1847. He also occupied a great mansion, high on what is now Sunnyside, but once was called Mansion Hill.
The Captains grandson built the magnificent granite bridge, complete with guard houses, that still stand today. Where the post office stands, used to be a stone Inn and a stone wall on the edge of the street. The bridge was dedicated on the 250th anniversary of Norwich as a salute and memorial of his good friend President William Howard Taft.
____94 Yrs. Later____
The mill is closed, the Yantic Fire Department is still active (from what I understand there are numerous pictures of Yantic inside), and the bridge is still as magnificent as it was then.

They say that the most precious structure in Yantic, is the Episcopal Church that sit's high on the hill overlooking the bridge and the mill, but if you ask me, it's the bridge. It was the gateway to a world, that for many of us, will never know, Romance,Riches, Adventure. If we are lucky, we will find for ourselves, the romance of Captain Williams and Lydia, or the adventure of the sea. Its amazing what one will do for love.
____Directions___
To find the bridge and it's box, follow Town Str. from Backus Hospital. Turn left at the congregational church onto West Town Str., follow West Town Str. I395, past the industrial park, and take a right onto Yantic Rd. Follow this to the Y in the road. On your right will be the bridge. Directly in front of you, will be the factory, and to your left, high on the hill is the church. The Fire department is on the right of the factory. This intersection is Yantic Rd., Sunnyside, and Chapel Hill Rd.
At the intersection, park off the road, at the bus shack. At the rear of the bus shack, left corner, walk 4 paces to the left along the stone wall. Looking at the wall, count up 3 large boulders. Your prize is behind some out of place stones midway up the wall. This is a very busy place so try to stamp in, in your car. PLEASE BE VERY DISCREET AND REHIDE WELL. Then enjoy the bridge. It is beautiful.

Hope you enjoy ,
