Take Sagitkos-Sunken Meadow Parkway north to exit SM-4east make a right off the ramp and follow the road east. You will find yourself in Kings Park along Main Street which is 25A. At the light (intersection of Main & Church Street) make a left hand turn. The library is at the intersection. Go north on Church to the light and make a right on to Old Dock Road. Notice the old brick buildings. These were part of the KPPC (Kings County Farm and Asylum opened in 1885). At the light make a right on to Saint Johnland Road. You will be in the old New York State Kings Park Psychiatric Centre part of which is now Nissequogue River State Park. Past one light. You will drive right out of the grounds pass the Obdia Smith House on the left and park at the dirt parking lot on the right. This is Harrison Pond Park, a Smithtown Town Park. Look for the White markers across the street and up the road from where you came. That is where you want to go in the woods.
Follow the white marked trail with the River on your right. Stop and sit on the bench & look at the water fowler and the River. Continue along the path you will begin to see the old brick buildings. These buildings provided work for many Irish immigrants because it was a job in the country, paid a decent wage & provided a place to live & meals.
Look for the large building with the flag. That’s the Administration Building for the park. Stop in. There is a kiosk of the park outside the building, inside they have a cool children’s room and other displays. On your way out, look behind the building to the boarded up buildings in the back. The windows are art work by children in the area.
Upon exiting the Administration Building look left and follow the black top to the sign that says trail (established in 1978, by the LI Greenbelt Trail Conference)
This trail is 32 miles from Sunken Meadow State Park to Hecksher State Park. Walk on the dirt trail a very short time and turn left on the old broken black top road to the white markers accross the path. You will see a large quad tree. Look inside the tree for your prize. I did not see any poison ivy here, but keep your eyes open.
