THIS BOX IS MISSING
The Travelers Insurance Company was founded by James Goodwin Batterson in 1863 as the first casualty insurance company in North America. Made of pink granite from a Rhode Island Quarry, the tower was completed in 1919. At 34 stories high, the tower reaches 527 feet above street level and has a flashing red beacon in the daytime as an aid to navigation. At night the tower is lit by a white light. The Travelers Tower was once the tallest structure in New England. At the 27th floor is a loggia, serving as an open observation area. Tours are available. In recent years, the tower has served as a nesting place for Perigrine Falcons, an endangered species. NOTE: A "Falcon Cam" was set up on the tower for scientific observation, and is available on the web at http://www.falconcam.travelers.com/

The Travelers Tower Letterbox
Elizabeth Park is located at the corner of Prospect Avenue and Asylum Avenue on the Hartford / West Hartford line.
Take exit 44 (Prospect Avenue) off I- 84 and head North on Prospect Avenue. The entrance to the gardens is about 1.5 miles on your left, Sunrise Overlook on your right.
Find the PROSPECT AVENUE entrance to ELIZABETH PARK. ACROSS the street from the entrance to the park, you will see the entrance to SUNRISE OVERLOOK. Here, enter the circlular driveway and park. Walk a few steps to the horseshoe shaped lookout area. Enjoy the spectacular view of the city for a while (see the Travelers Tower?). As you face the "Insurance City", find the "Christmas Bush" to your right. Look underneath the side of the bush facing the city... it is here you will find what you seek under a good cover of leaves.
This spot, SUNRISE OVERLOOK was named for the amazing sunrises seen from here. The sunsets aren't to shabby, either!
