Waushacum Ponds Rail Trail
MDC Property/No Dogs Allowed
Terrain: Easy/ Clues: Easy
Planted by the lazy letterboxer
This series is dedicated to my husband, David.

From Route 12 in Sterling turn onto Gates Road which is across from Ms. Dee’s Candies. Approximately 2/10’s of a mile down Gates Road look for the entrance to the Waushacum Ponds Rail Trail. There is a spacious parking lot on the opposite side of the street.
Walk along the trail for a short way, you will see water on your right. As you walk look for the spot where a tree along the water is lying at about a 45-degree angle parallel to the trail. Look into the woods on the left and spy a cement abutment. Look behind the abutment on the right side in the back and “take-out” Dave’s Fave #1.
Walk further along the trail until you come to a trail on the left. Walk all the way down that trail to the water (known locally as “The Quag”). You will see a side trail on the left, walk into the woods and look behind the big cement “rock” and “pop” out Dave’s Fave #2.
Go back to the main trail and you will pass over a bridge (which, incidentally, comes from the infamous Big Dig in Boston). Shortly after that you come to an area with picnic tables on both sides of the path. Just before the tables on the right there is a path that curves down by the water. Take that path for about 60 steps. "Sniff" out Dave's Fave #3 behind a tall pine tree about 6 feet off the path. Go back to the main trail.
Immediately after the picnic area you come to a fork in the road. The rail trail goes off to the left. Just as you enter the fork you will also see a trail into the woods on the left. Follow this trail as it goes down and up and sort of flattens out. Look for a tree on the left side of the trail that is branchless and broken off at about 10ft (looks a somewhat like a big stick). At this tree take 25 steps along the trail and look for a twin trunked tree off to the left making a perfect V. Look behind the V tree and “bring home the bacon” with Dave’s Fave #4. After stamping in return to the main trail.
Walk on awhile until you see a red geodetic marker (No. M12T) on the left-hand side of the trail, shortly after that marker you’ll see a trail that goes to the left. Walk straight down this trail, it will intersect another trail. Look straight ahead for a large oak tree that is nestled among beech and pine trees. Look behind it and “hot-diggity-dog” you’ll find Dave’s Fave #5. Return to the main trail.
Walk on awhile until you see a trail on the left that makes a hairpin turn into the woods. Follow it a short way until you see a pile of logs on the left. Look behind the twin trunked tree behind the log pile and “brew” up Dave’s Fave #6.
At this point you can stay on this small trail (keeping the main trail above you on the left) and eventually it will bring you back to the fork in the road (you will pass by the trees where Fave 4 and 5 are hidden) or you can return to the main trail and follow it back to where you started or you can continue on and find the Everybody Loves Ginger letterbox hidden further on down the trail. This trail eventually comes out in downtown Sterling behind the Cider Mill Bldg.
