This is my first in a series on Children's literature, and it was placed behind the elementary school my children attend. This stamp was carved to recognize E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web as one of the most beloved of all children’s novels, and the first many children read on their own.

Directly behind Marlin Elementary School is a brand new track. Take the track North and around until you hit a backdrop for a now defunct baseball field. Behind that backdrop and behind the new track is a trail into the woods. Take this trail for a few steps, and then stop to make a decision: NORTH or SOUTH? LEFT or RIGHT? Eschew the sinister path and choose instead the path that leads to victory in the war between the states. Walk 25 steps and stop. 4 steps to the east is a water meter cover, and then 19 steps to the east past that marker is a felled tree. Charlotte is in the uprooted base of that tree.

I am excited about this new series of letterboxes because I teach Children’s literature to undergraduates at Indiana University. If you’d like to receive my list of “100+ books to read to your child before he leaves for college,” just send me a note!
