~I just love finding these little gems that towns have opened for public use.
Find your way to:
Open Space
Town of Old Lyme

The Bartholomew Family

This is located on Buttonball Road. If coming from Route 156 it will be just after you cross a very narrow railroad bridge on the right. There is room for a couple of cars.
There is no ink in the boxes, but they look nice in solid colors, or markers would do nicely too 8-)
Start walking down the wide path and very quickly come to a "T". Go right with the arrow. Continue on the trail a bit (at any intersection/ corner just follow the arrows). Just before you come to a narrow bridge look on your right for two stumps just off the path that are next to each other. Look behind these and under rocks to find your first butterfly.
After replacing and rehiding this box, continue on the trail, crossing the narrow bridge and then coming to an even more narrow bridge to cross. Cross this one also and soon you will come to a large, three way intersection.
Again, go right with the arrow. Soon you will pass a LARGE, mossy rock on left. The trail will bend to the left. Watch for where a tree was formerly across the trail, but has been cut away. Follow the left half to a tree that is growing out of and over a rock. Look in the roots of this tree for butterfly #2. This is a very special carving. It was done by Craftymouse of New York and was given to me for my birthday last year. I could not think of a better way to put it to use than to have everyone enjoy it 8-)
After replacing and rehiding this box continue along the trail being sure to follow the arrows. They will bring you right back to your car.
I hope you enjoyed the walk.
