Near the border of Montgomery and Frederick counties (take I 270, exit 22 at Rte 109). Turn right on Comus Road. This will take you to an odd intersection that is the mountain entrance. Do not go directly up the mountain, but continue diagonally across the intersection. (There will be a pond on your left.) The road soon turns into gravel. At the stop sign, keep right (Mt. Ephraim Road). Continue for about 2 miles on the gravel road to a point that turns 90 degrees to the left. Park at one of the small pull offs nearby. The whole drive from the parking lot is 2.4 miles. After you park. find the blue blaze trail that starts in a northerly direction across the ford in the road (stream running across the road)
The Good Doctor
Take the Northern Peaks Trail to the top of the first steep hill, just before you start going down again, spot a blue blaze on the right. Look to the right of that blaze and spy a cluster of rocks. Go around the tree and find a large “fish shaped” rock. Under this rock is where you will find The Good Doctor.
Thing 1
Continue on down and around the trail and begin looking to your right for two large outcroppings of rock like a large stone wall. Walk towards the first of the two (looking at them, to the right) Look for the tree in front of the first outcropping of rocks (at the far right), go around past the tree and up the side of the hill, around to the right, at this point, on the outermost side spy 2 OLD, dead-skins of a tree resting against the face of the rocks. From there go 3-5 steps right and hidden against the rocks at the base is Thing 1.
Thing 2
Walk around the face of the outcroppings to the second large set of rocks, past the cave type area in front of this outcropping. Go around the outermost left side of this outcropping and look UP for a skinny tree growing above. Just below the tree, check the crevice and behind a few rocks you will find Thing 2.
One Fish, Two Fish…….
Continue up the trail, climb a steep hill and pass thru a tunnel of mountain laurel. Notice a 2 in 1 tree with a blue blaze on the left. Keep going to the next double blue blaze on the right. Take a reading of due N and spot, in the distance, a large dead tree stump leaning against a smaller tree. Walk to this stump and look inside the hole about half way up and under some rocks you will find One Fish, Two Fish…..
Red Fish, Blue Fish
Continue on the path (notice all the trees down on the left, wow! what damage to a beautiful location) until you reach an area where the path begins to be lined with branches from all the downed trees like a branch wall. On the right side of the trail, stop and look way right to the freshly cut double stump. Go Find Red Fish, Blue Fish.
Green Eggs and Ham
Continue on the path. Wow, not much forest left up here! Go until you reach the area where the path goes up to the left along the side of the mountain. From the point where the path turns sharp left, look to your right for a fresh cut “octopus looking” tree stump. Stop there, look on the right side, wedged up under some rocks, enjoy your Green Eggs and Ham.
If you would like another box, Winged Victory is on this same trail, it is a beautifuly hand carved stamp!
