FULL MOON SERIES

Full Wolf Moon
January

Full Moon names date back to Native Americans, of what is now the northern and eastern United States. The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred. There was some variation in the Moon names, but in general, the same ones were current throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior. European settlers followed that custom and created some of their own names. Since the lunar month is only 29 days long on the average, the full Moon dates shift from year to year. Farmer’s Alamanac

This series of twelve boxes will be placed over the course of the year in celebration of each month’s full moon.
The full moon in January 2007 is on January 3rd at 8:57 am

• Full Wolf Moon - JANUARY
Amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages. Thus, the name for January's full Moon.

You will find this letterbox at the Oak Knoll Wildlife Sanctuary in Attleboro, MA

From the parking lot enter the path through the narrow gate in the stone wall. Follow the path to the left, you will see Blue Dots on the trees, trail markers.
Follow this trail to the "Y". There is a trail post but presently the signage is missing. Turn left and continue to follow the blue dots.

At the next "Y" bear left. Continue to follow the blue dot trail. It will slop downhilland over stones and roots. At the Green Trail Marker Post follow the Talaquega Trail left.
Follow the blue dot trail over the bridge and boardwalk. Continue following trail until you reach Talaquega Lake. You will see a Trail Marker indicating Lake Loop. Turn left. Follow trail around lake, keeping lake on your right. About halfway around the lake there will be a short trail to the water's edge, stay to the left and continue to follow the blue trail up the incline.
At what seems to be the top of the hill the trail forms a "T". Look to the left down this unmarked trail. There will be a large outcropping of rocks.Find the largest rock. This is my howling place! On the right and to the back of this rock you will find me sleeping. Please stamp in and replace under the 3 rocks and leaves/brush.

Go back to the blue trail and continue around the Lake. The trail will circle the lake and you will exit on the same path you came in on.
