Difficulty: Clues and walk easy
Walking time: about 0.15 mile one way
Stamp hand-carved
Status: alive and well on October 9, 2016
NOTICE: clues slightly revised on June 27, 2013.
This box is near the Gros Ventre Slide in the Teton National Forest just outside the eastern boundary of Grand Teton National Park. It is at an elevation of about 7000 feet, so expect snow on it part of the year. Being a geologist, I was fascinated by this landslide which is one of the largest earth movements in the world. So, I went back to my nearby campsite and carved the stamp for this box.
Drive north from Jackson on U.S. Highway 26, 89, & 191 to Gros Ventre Junction. Turn right (northeast) on the road that goes past the Gros Ventre Campground to Kelly. Continue past Kelly to Gros Ventre Road and turn right (east). Go 4.7 miles on Gros Ventre Road to the Gros Ventre Slide Geological Area interpretive signs and parking area.
Facing signs, go left on the path a short distance. Turn right at the trail sign onto the dirt trail. Go past a bench. Continue up the trail to a rocky debris field on a ridge (do not take the trail that goes to the left just before the rocky ridge). On top of the ridge on right side of trail is a short angular-sawed off post that once was the post for an interpretive sign. Continue on the trail going east for about 78 steps to the next short angular-sawed off post. From that post go at about 2 degrees (from north) up slope for about 20 steps to a moderate size dead Pine Tree. The box is on the north side of the dead tree, up against a small weathered upturned stump, under some rocks and plant debris. Be alert for snakes!
Please please be sure the contents are double ziplocked when you put them back in the box (i.e. the stamp is in a ziploc, the book is in a ziploc, and the two are in the larger ziploc bag), and put all of it INSIDE the box. Please rehide the box well under the rocks and cover with some plant debris so that it can not be seen from any direction.
I will not be able to check on this box very often; so, please let me know if you find it, or if it needs attention or is missing:
