You will gather numerical clues for part of your hike. These clues will be used to find the letterbox.
A compass will help on this trek. Also, one of the clues may require binoculars. Please bring your own pen and ink pad.
Go to East Harbor State Park.
Find the "West Harbor Hiking Trail". This is at the East Harbor State Park Marina, which is the Northern-most part of the East Harbor State Park.
Park at the small lot at the right side of the road, and begin your hike on the West Harbor Hiking Trail.
As you walk on this path you will have water on your left and right.
After a 10-minute walk on the gravel trail you will see two navigation aids in the water to your left: A red triangle with the large number "10", and a green square with the large number "9".
Clue A: At this point, look up the channel to the North, towards Lake Erie. You will see a 352 foot tall Doric column - the "Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial" on South Bass Island. You will also see another navigation aid about 1/8 mile up the channel. It is a green square with a large number in it, up on a pole about 20 feet tall. What is that number? (This is where you may need binoculars).
Continue your walk. The trail veers to the right into the woods and away from the water, at a heading of North-East.
After about 5 minutes you will come to a "T" in the trail. (If you kept going forward you would get to the beach). Take the path to the left, at a heading of North-West.
After about 1/8 mile you will see a large wooden sign that says:
Small Boat Harbor
West Harbor, Ohio
Constructed by
U.S. Army
Turn to your right (North), and start walking.
You will see a series of concrete blocks that you can walk on. These blocks form a pier that takes you North, out into Lake Erie. Walk to the end of this pier.
Clue B: At the end of the pier is a navigation aid. It consists of a 15-foot high platform that holds a square with the number "1" in it. Look up at the platform. You will see a metal "rim", or raised edge, that surrounds the platform. This raised edge is about 4 inches tall. Look carefully near the left end of this raised edge. You will see a 2-digit number. For example, the number might be “33” or “25”. This 2-digit number is about 2 inches tall. The number looks like it was made freehand using a welding torch, and is made of metal that is raised slightly above the metal surface. Look carefully: the weld marks are the same color as the raised edge of the platform, and may not be obvious at first. What is this number?
Add the numbers from Clue A and Clue B. It should be a 2-digit number.
Look out over the lake toward South Bass Island and imagine what it was like 200 years ago.
Now, turn back toward land and walk South, back along the pier.
As you get near land, look in the concrete walkway for a brass disk that’s about 4 inches in diameter. This disk will say “Corps of Engineers – U.S. ARMY” and “Survey Mark”.
You will also notice a steel post near the disk. This post is one of the many that hold the walkway safety cable. Consider this post to be "Post number 1".
Keep walking South on the concrete pathway. Stop when you get to the post whose number is the sum of Clue A and B. For example, if you added Clue A and B and got an answer of 25, then stop at the twenty-fifth post, starting at the post nearest the brass disk.
With the post on your right, there will be a 2-trunked tree on your left. Each trunk is about 6 inches in diameter.
Behind that tree (East side of tree) is a boulder.
On the East side of the boulder is a pile of rocks. Look under the pile.

I'VE BEEN TOLD THAT THERE IS A SNAKE LIVING UNDER MY LETTERBOX!!! BE CAREFUL!!!
