Angelina County is the only county in Texas named for a woman. Angelina was a Hasinai Indian girl who greatly assisted Spanish missionaries/explorers in the late 17th century. When the Spanish left, she served as an interpreter to French explorers and kept Christianity alive in her village. Angelina's name is given to a county, a river, a college, and a national forest.
Directions:
Angelina College is located on US 59 in Lufkin. When you get on campus, find the ACTIVITY CENTER. There is a parking lot to the right of it. At the back of this parking lot, close to the ACTIVITY CENTER, you will see a gazebo. This is where the nature trail begins.
To the Box:
1. Walk past the gazebo and onto the trail.
2. At the POST OAK, take the loop to the right.
3. When you get to another split in the trail, there will be a sign on your left that says SHORT LOOP 1/5 MILE TO TRAIL HEAD. Stay to the right.
4. You will cross a wooden bridge, pass a bench on your right, and cross another small wooden bridge.
5. Look for the CHERRY-BARK OAK. When you get to this tree, stop and look to your right. About 56 steps off the trail is a rather long log. The little angel is hiding on the right end of the log, between the log and a tree.
6. After stamping in and rehiding, you can continue to the trail head, or take the Creek Loop. Enjoy! Please notify me as to the status of this box.
