This box is part of the 2005 Great Lakes "Hometown Landmarks" Letterbox Exchange project. The box was created by Laughing Coyote and planted by TJ_Mich. It honors a mysterious cabin in Illinois, and is located not too far from another (not-so-mysterious) cabin in Michigan.

The University of Michigan's Nichols Arboretum is a 123 acre park located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, just east of UM's Central Campus (see map and detailed directions). It is popularly known as "The Arb," and was designed in 1906 by noted landscape architect Ossian Cole Simonds. It's a great spot for hiking, jogging, picnicking, dog-walking, playing Frisbee, or just plain enjoying the outdoors.

Parking during weekdays is extremely limited; you might try the parking structures at the University of Michigan hospital, or metered parking in the area. On weekends and evenings, though, there is a large parking lot available free of charge, on Washington Heights Boulevard just past the Ronald McDonald House.

Begin at the Washington Heights entrance.

woodchip aisle
peony garden
continue ahead
down the stairs
right on!
poet's bench
primitive bench
right ahead
don't stare at logs
curve around
pass 54
rest with a deck of cards
stone bench vista
General Stonewall
path behind stone bench pair
down to Natalie's bench
stairs to right
bottom stair: don't despair! you're getting there
continue on
stop for water
(mental note: hydrant at 350)
go to hill at 20
third log up: see 36 ahead left
uprooted stump at 105
stump makes an X
X marks the spot

rehide me well
back down hill
on to the remembered hydrant
stairs at 350
head on up
you know this bench
veer right
back to the beginning
