The Pilot Knob Ridge Preserve

I hid a letterbox here because this is one of my favorite places to visit. You have scenic vistas, waterfalls and opportunities to view wildlife in some of the open woods on the blue trail.

There are two trails. The orange trail, which is a loop, that ends at an overlook with a gazebo. One thing, when you get to the trial intersection where the orange trail splits not far from the trailhead, the trail to the right will eventually follow the old driveway that used to lead to the gazebo, a couple of areas are paved (nature is taking over though). This is still part of the orange trail. When you reach the gazebo whichever path you take to get there, the intersection with the blue trail is south of the gazebo, approximately 200’ away in the tall grass. It is easy to see, but some people have noted in the logbook at the trailhead that they missed this intersection, but with my hint you will have no problem. The blue trail, which will take you to, the waterfall is through an open hardwood, young forest that is home to a lot of different species of birds. If you are a bird watcher, take some time in some of these areas to watch for these feather critters.

Directions to trailhead:
From the I-87 Northway: Take exit 21 (Lake Luzerne/Lake George Village). Follow signs towards Lake George, turn right on Rt. 9N and follow Rt. 9N to a T intersection with Rt. 9. Turn left (north), and proceed ~0.5 miles. Turn right (north/east) onto Rt. 9L. Follow Rt. 9L for approx 7 miles. Turn left (north) onto Pilot Knob Rd. Proceed about 0.7 miles to a gravel U-shaped parking area on the right, you will see the trailhead sign in .

Clues:
Take the blue trail at the gazebo a follow it until you get to the waterfall, which is about 1.5 miles from the gazebo. The trail will cross the stream that comes from the waterfall and then will loop back until you are at the top of the falls. BECARFUL the rocks are slippery. Now you will cross the stream again and walk 4 paces down the trail and look east (your right). And walk to a rock out crop that runs north and south, perpendicular to the stream. It is about 21 paces from the trail. Go to where the face of this outcrop meets the north side of the stream and then go 0 degrees along the rock face about 10 paces. You will pass a boulder that looks like it is leaning out and a split in the rock face that is about 1 foot wide and you will come to where there is a rock that is jutting out from the face about 6 to 10 feet. Look into a hole that is partially blocked with some small rocks for a camouflaged box. (Look carefully).

Please re-hide carefully and make sure that all the bags and lid are sealed. Winters are tough on boxes.

I have a favor. This area is almost always clean, if you see a stray water bottle or candy wrapper, please pick it up to help and keep this beautiful preserve a beautiful place.
