Hike difficulty: dirt part of trail moderate; it is rocky, there are some steep uphill portions, and there is a rocky off-trail portion at the end.
Distance: about 1.1 miles one way
Stamp hand-carved

The box is in Sabino Canyon Recreation Area (USFS) a little northeast of Tucson. Take Tanque Verde Road east. Turn north on Sabino Canyon Road and take it all the way to entrance of Sabino Canyon Recreation Area on your right. There is a fee to park (if you do not have an appropriate national pass).
From parking lot walk northeast to the paved Sabino Canyon Road. Walk northeast on road for a total of about 0.7 miles. A short distance past a sign on the left for where the cactus eat you will see a trail sign on the left for a trail with a Spanish name that means “hopeful”. Walk north on this trail for a total of about 0.4 miles. After walking up a steep slope over very smooth bedrock, you will come to a flat area. At 11 steps more there is a short "unofficial" trail to the right. Walk on this trail for about 18 steps to the end at a thin medium height Saguaro Cactus with a small arm on its right side. Face east and enjoy the view of beautiful Sabino Canyon below you. Walk at about 180 degrees (from mag. north) for about 35 steps to a small rock ledge hidden amongst three thin medium height Saguaros without arms. The ledge is under the Saguaro on the right. The box is on top of the ledge under some flat rocks and a small branch. Folks, this is a wilderness area with its inherent dangers; so, do be alert for snakes, scorpions, mountain lions, and rabid foxes, skunks, & coyotes.
Please be sure the contents are double ziplocked when you put them back in the box (i.e. the stamp is in a ziploc, the book is in a ziploc, and the two are in the larger ziploc bag). Please rehide the box well under rocks, twigs and branches so that it can not be seen from any direction.
Contact me if the box needs attention:
