Difficulty: Easy, about 1 mile loop.
12/08: The Sunglasses stamp seems to be missing. I know that the logs are full (again!). I will get up there soon for maintenance.
One hot August day, Armadillo Jo and her little dog Betsy decided to take a trip to the beach. Jo, adhering to usual form, neglected to listen to the weather. In fact, Jo was completely oblivious to the weather for an entire week! Jo packed the usual gear: sunglasses, flip flops, and a beach ball. She also packed a radio to listen to groovy tunes while sitting on the beach. Jo arrived at her favorite Lake Michigan beach and chilled out while Betsy played with the beach ball. Life was good. Suddenly, the radio station announced one of those super annoying “Emergency Alerts” that are usually a just a test. Jo tuned it out and continued to bake in the sun. Then the radio station announced yet another “Emergency Alert”. This time Jo listened:
“We have issued a hurricane warning for the eastern shore of Lake Michigan effective immediately. An unprecedented category 5 hurricane, Chlotilde, has unexpectedly traveled up the Mississippi River and strengthened! We have never seen anything like this! We suggest……”
Just then, the radio cut out. Jo took off her sunglasses and was suddenly wooshed away by a strong gust of wind. The wind was so strong that is blew her and Betsy clear back into Indiana, in front of a lakeside cemetery. “Well Betsy, we’re not at Lake Michigan anymore!”
As Armadillo Jo and Betsy both busted their posterior upon landing, they need some help finding Armadillo Jo’s missing items: flip flop, beach ball, and sunglasses. You will also find one extraneous item that was carried to Indiana by the storm.
Make your way to Potato Creek State Park, near North Liberty, IN. Obtain a trail map and make your way to Porter Rea Cemetery and park in the lot. (In winter, trail maps may not be available. Go to: http://www.IN.gov/dnr and print a map from the website before heading out.) Walk toward the historical marker and read about the history of the area. Be sure to take note of two things: The year when the land was deeded and the year that the Porter Cemetery Association was founded. You will need this information later. After you read both sides of the sign, head down the path towards the fishing pier. Once you reach the end of the cemetery, head down the path that heads behind the cemetery. Go around the fallen tree and continue down the trail. You will come to a bench on the right. Have a seat and enjoy the beautiful view! Continue down the trail, crossing the small bridge. The trail will make a sharp right turn and will shortly take a sharp left turn. At the sharp left turn, stop and take a reading of 110 degrees. Head _____(the last number of both years on the plaque) paces at this heading and find a flip flop under a pink stone, bowling ball size and flat on one side.
Continue on the main trail. You will come to a “rock garden” on the right side of the trail, and shortly after, another bench. Continue on the main trail. You will soon come to a really hideous multi-trunked tree on the right. Shortly afterward, a boardwalk! Cross the boardwalk, and you will come to an isthmus. At the end of the isthmus, you must make a choice. You have made your use of trail 4 for the time being, so follow the wide trail straight ahead! This used to be an old county road before this was a state park. Walk along this wide path and you will soon come to a large, gnarly stump that has been cut off and knocked over on the left side of the trail. From here, walk_____(take the first number of both years and place them side by side *do not add*) paces to a smaller, “snakey” log on the left. You will find some sunglasses in the tail end, covered with bark.
Walk a little bit, but not too much, to a big, ugly tree on the left with snakes all over it. From this tree, walk _____(third number in the year of the founding of the Porter Cemetery Association) paces. Look to the left and you will see a stump. Around back, under bark, you will find a beach ball. You’ve found Armadillo Jo’s missing stuff! Continue on the wide trail until trail 4 crosses it again. Take trail 4 to the right and soon you will back to your car!
Be sure to replace all bark and covering. All boxes are less than 10 paces from the trail.
Congrats to Grandvilla and Mobiusklein, First Finders!
