The loop road, road #FR 545, connecting Sunset Crater Volcano and Wupatki National Monuments, is a very scenic paved route taking you over rugged volcanic terrain, through Pine forests, past views of the Painted Desert, and through Juniper-Pinyon forests and expansive grasslands. You will have the opportunity to explore ancient pueblo ruins.
Directions for this series are from south to north; however, the boxes can be found in reverse.
Driving north from Flagstaff on US Highway 89, shortly after passing mile marker 430, turn right (east) on the road to Sunset Crater Volcano, road FR 545. There is a fee to drive on this loop road.
<B>Please please be sure the contents are double ziplocked when you put them back in the boxes (i.e. the stamp is in a ziploc, the book is in a ziploc, and the two are in the larger ziploc bag). Please put the lid on tight. Please rehide the boxes well under the rocks and covered with twigs and other plant debris so that they can not be seen from any direction.</B>
- <B>Cervus Letterbox</B>: after turning on FR 545, drive for about 0.8 mile and turn right (south) into a dirt, boulder-lined parking area.
Re-carved stamp, new box and clues placed 6/27/24
Park at the SW end of the lot.
Look for the brown carsonite (stake) which reads No Motor Vehicles.
From the sign walk along the two-track trail.
In a short distance you will reach a rise in the trail.
Stop in the middle of the rise and look left to the long, fallen Ponderosa Pine.
Sight at 110* and walk 35 steps to the tall, living Ponderosa Pine.
Walk around that tree, on the left side and come to the top of the fallen tree.
About a foot from the top the box is tucked up against and covered with 2 pieces of bark.
- <B>Sunset Crater Volcano Monument Webbox</B>: Letterboxes are not allowed to be physically placed in national parks and national monuments administered by the U. S. National Park Service. So, I have created this webbox. You must actually visit the area of the clues; however, you need to go to the Web to obtain your finders stamp and sign the log book.

- <B>Sialia Letterbox</B>: after passing through and leaving Sunset Crater Volcano NM, continue on the road, heading towards Wupatki NM. Turn left (northwest) into the Painted Desert Vista. Drive around the parking loop and park in the last parking space. From the last parking space continue walking towards the entrance and along the right edge of the pavement to the first Ponderosa Pine tree on the right. Walk about 6 more steps and stop. Look right to a large, pointed rock outcrop, about 4 steps from the pavement. From the backside of the rock outcrop walk about 85 steps at about 258 degrees (from mag. north) to a tall snag. From the snag walk about 36 steps at about 282 degrees to a dead Juniper tree leaning to the west. The box is under the back side of the trunk under bark and a rock.
- <B>Wupatki Monument Webbox</B>: Letterboxes are not allowed to be physically placed in national parks and national monuments administered by the U. S. National Park Service. So, I have created this webbox. You must actually visit the area of the clues; however, you need to go to the Web to obtain your finders stamp and sign the log book.

- <B>Uta Letterbox</B>: After passing the Wupatki Visitor Center turnoff, continue along the road and turn left (southeast) into the Doney Picnic Area (USFS) and park there. Find the sign titled "Bus/RV Parking ONLY". From that sign walk about 83 steps at about 50 degrees (from mag. north) directly to a Juniper tree. From the back side of that Juniper, continue for about 39 steps at about 34 degrees to the next Juniper. The box is on the back (north) side up against an Ephedra (Mormon Tea) bush on the northeast edge and under a rock and plant debris. Alive and well on October 11, 2021.
