Location: Pittsfield Town Square, Pittsfield, IL. If you can find Pittsfield, you can find the town square-since the town is itty bitty!
No dogs, and since this is an "urban" letterbox, having a camera or sketchpad as "cover" might be a good idea. There is no hike, it's very wheelchair and stroller accessible. Pittsfield has a number of old church graveyards, and if it's lunchtime, I heartily recommend the Red Dome restaraunt, also on the square.

My husband's family is from Pike County, and he told me about the area. Seems that Pike county is famous for, or maybe just really likes, pigs. During the Pig Days celebration, they would mark off a grid inside a pen. Inside each square of the grid was a number. Tickets were sold with numbers on them, that corresponded to the grid numbers. A pig would then be put in the pen and well...whatever number he pooped on, won! I'm not sure they still have Pig Days, and my husband says he saw the Pig Pooperoo only as a little kid, but here's hoping this tradition comes back!

One festive Pig Day, a little piggy was taken into town and dropped off at the town square. Lots of people with tickets were staring at her, and it had been a long ride into town. The poor piggy had to poop, but where to go with all those people around?? She started off at the courthouse entrance facing Madison street, under the "erected AD 1894" sign.Feeling quite uncomfortable, she took 5 paces to the lampost, then 13 paces around the pine tree to the telephone pole. She scrambled quickly to the right to the "Pike County Courthouse" entrance, but they wouldn't let her in to use the potty. Drat! She went 22 paces back to the step she started from, and feeling rather panicky, took a seat on the bench in front of the pine tree. Finally, the poor piggy ran under the pine tree and hid under a pile of pine needles near the trunk. You'll find her there, much to embarassed to be a part of the Pig Pooperoo!

Rehide the piggy well!
