This is one of my favorite hikes in western Colorado. It's easy enough for small children, yet takes you through the pine scented forests far from civilzation to a deep gem colored lake tucked safely between two mountains. As many times as I've made the journey, it never fails to take my breath away when I break through the trees and my eyes fall on the brilliant turquoise water.

As you travel across Grand Mesa on highway 65 watch for the Mesa Lakes. The turnoff is just past Jumbo if you are coming from the Grand Junction side, or just past the Mesa Lakes Resort if you are coming from the Cedaredge side. Turn in, then follow the road to the Glacier Lakes Picnic Area. You will have to park here.
Park and walk up the hill, away from the parking lot. Turn right and you will see the trailhead. Follow the signs that guide you to Lost Lake.
When you come to a junction where you must make a choice, go left. This junction is just before you come to the first large lake halfway along the trail. You will have your choice of going to the right or the left... choose left and keep the lake on your right side.
Follow the trail around the lake and continue until it descends and ends in a large, flat area at the side of the hidden lake.
Stand in this flat area that is very near the water. You will see small trails fingering off all around, but this is the obvious end of the main trail.
Turn to your right and you will see large rocks all ajumble with a very large boulder perched atop. Look to the left of this giant boulder...about 15 feet...you will see a giant pine tree curving out of the mountain and reaching for the sky. It starts as a single tree as it leaves the ground and gracefully becomes two partway up.
CAREFULLY choose a path to the uphill side of this tree. Take your time and watch your step!
Stand at the trunk on the uphill side of the tree and take a compass reading of 40 degrees.
Just a short climb (about 15') in this direction you will see a large flat boulder with a small pine tree growing out of the back of it.
CAREFULLY climb up to this rock and you will find the journal safely resting beneath the front edge of this boulder, behind several smaller rocks.

Please be discreet!
PLEASE be sure to rehide it carefully and safely, making sure it is hidden from view!

A handcarved stamp.
A handmade journal.

No strollers or wheelchairs, but I've personally taken small children to this lake with no problems.

At an easy pace it took us 45 to 50 minutes each way.

Placed by the Splendid Buccaneers!
