LOCATION: Settlers’ Cemetery on W. 5th St. between Popular and Church St.
HISTORY: This is the oldest cemetery in Charlotte with the oldest grave dating back to 1776. It is a small cemetery of about 100 graves in the heart of downtown Charlotte and part of a walking tour series of historical Charlotte. For more information on walking tours of the cemetery call 704-332-2227.
HIKE: A short trip through a long journey in time.
RECOMMENDATIONS: The parking is terrible during the week in this area but easy on the weekends (and free then). Another letterbox at the Elmwood/Pinewood Cemetery is just up 6th St. (parallel to 5th St—look for the numbers to increase from here) only about 5 blocks away at 700 W. 6thSt. So you may want to bring these clues too. Don’t forget to bring a stamp pad and pen. This area has heavy traffic during the week so please take care to hide it completely from view when you are finished.

Then turn left and let 5th Street be your guide.
To your right, not far from the great magnolia tree
Is where the Great Uncle of President Polk will be.
The Iron Cross of Colonel Owens is on the left as you continue on your way.
In Virginia at Snicker’s Gap was the last battle of his day.
Nearby is the oak tree that stands in honor of George Washington.
It commemorates his visit here in 1791.
An Iron Cross for Major General Graham is next on your right.
At McIntyre’s Farm on Beatties Ford Rd, his soldiers showed their might.
Six hundred British back to Cornwallis, they did push
With defeated cries of “there’s a rebel behind every bush!”
The path splits as you see the four Orr pillars ahead.
Look to the West and see the tree that shelters the Cross family’s bed.
In all directions, its eighteen arms are stretching wide.
Find the stump to its left, lift the stone and look inside.
