As of July 2008, this letterbox is no longer here. It was reported missing and we chose not to replace it for the second time :-(
Located on top of Owl's Head Mountain off Route 232. Heading North on Rte 232, the entrance to Owl's head will be on your right. A short car drive up to the cul de sac where you begin your short hike to the summit.
Once at the top you will come to a stone gazebo. Stand in the entrance facing out. Turn ESE 110' and walk 16 paces. A trail breaks to the right due south. Follow the trail 36 paces. There will be a small clump of birch trees on your left. Face ESE 120' and walk 26 paces to the top of the highest point facing Lake Groton. Continue ESE on the high (left) side of the open rock for a total of 70 paces. You'll find a small rock cave just to your left down low. Underneath you will find your prize. There are a few branches and leaves stuffed in there to camaflage the box a bit from passerbyes. Just beyond the rock cave still facing ESE is a bunch of small pines where the trail breaks around both sides. If you pass this you've gone to far.
This is a short scenic hike. Bring a bag lunch and enjoy the view from the top. Great hike for all ages!
