Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris) are the only hummingbird species which breed east of the Mississippi. They are only about 3 1/2 inches long and weigh a fraction of an ounce. Their primary food supply is nectar, which they drink by reaching deeply into flowers with their long and strong tongues. To stay alive, Ruby-throats, must visit thousands of flowers each day to obtain enough food. To save energy, Ruby-throats often enter an almost dormant state at night---their metabolism dropping by as much as 90%! More information on the Ruby-throated Hummingbird can be found at: http://www.rubythroat.org.

Clues:

From I-84 take Exit 55 (Eagle Road). Head North on Eagle Road through the intersection of Chinden and Eagle Road. Continue down the hill through the intersection that leads to the River’s End Subdivision & Two River’s Subdivision. The next street on your left before crossing the river is West Mace Road. Turn left on to W. Mace Road and park off the side of the road on your right under the Wagoner Farm Sign.

Follow the path along Eagle Road and cross under the street tunnel on your right. Continue along the half paved half gravel path past the beautiful river on your left and the River’s End Subdivision homes on your right.

When you come to a tree in front of your path and to your right with 6 tree trunks intertwined count 216 steps or 108 paces (2 steps count as one pace). You will reach a tree on your left with 4 tree trunks intertwined at the bend of the river. You will see a rusty bridge ahead of you. Search the pile of rocks at the base of the tree trunk and there you should find the Happy Hummingbird letterbox.
