Reported missing, please wait until I can check be fore attempting!

One of my very favorite areas, beautiful redwoods and ferns and it smells wonderful, up the street a little (if you go right on Pinehurst) is a little post office and one room school house for the town of Canyon, a very cool little community with some very colorful (but private) people.

From San Francisco/Oakland:
Take the 24 North towards Walnut Creek. Through the Caldecott Tunnel. Take the Orinda Exit. Turn Right at the end of the off ramp, at the next stop light, veer to the right onto Moraga Way.

From Concord:
Take 24 South, take the Orinda exit (once on the exit take the second part that wraps under the freeway) this will put you onto Moraga Way.

Continue on Moraga Way until you come to a small strip mall (Jack in the Box on the right, two gas stations). At the stop light, turn Right onto Moraga/Canyon Rd. Continue on Canyon Rd until you come to a “T” (Pinehurst Rd) where you will park.

As you are approaching the T from Moraga there will be a gate on you left (not the one straight ahead at the T) Go through the gate and cross the bridge, you will go up a pretty steady climb around the time you reach the top and it starts to flatten out a bit you will pass though and old gate, after the gate there will be two more fairly sharp left hand turns. At the second (right before the canopy of trees opens up) there will be a fallen tree on your right, to the right of the tree is a faint deer trail that goes between two smallish bay trees you will see another fallen giant bay tree that has a large branch that touches the ground with two branches that have been broken off at the same place making what kind of looks like a U, behind the U inside the branch you will find it! If you continue on down the original trail a bit you will find some delicious blackberries on the right (not a lot but very sweet) at the right time of year.

This is an EBMUD train and the sign says you need a permit, so here is the link, some years we have one some we don’t, we have never been asked to present it.

sorry no dogs or bikes allowed..

This hike is about ¾ of a mile each way and uphill part of the way, but we did it with our 4 year old and she did fine, if it is warm out though bring water and watch out for poison oak, there is a lot around here….
