Sawtooth City is an old mining community, now made up of scattered log cabins in various decaying conditions near Beaver Creek.
Hike notes: Dry camping area, great motorcycling area, no restrooms, plenty of Rv/trailer turn around area, OK for dogs, but watch for snakes, off road strollers OK. You may want to explore the various log cabin sites scattered about the area. Hike to box: a few minutes.
On Highway 75 heading north from Galena Summit just after Smiley Creek Lodge/RV Park/Store, and before the Lake Alturas Turn off, proceed to the dirt/gravel road on your left near the Historical Sign for Sawtooth City. The dirt road continues for 2.2 miles (good 2 WD) passing a dry camp ground and generally following Beaver Creek slightly uphill. Turn left on the first dirt road past the collapsed log cabin on your left. You will see a sign, Saw tooth City 1879-1884. The left turn will be 1/10 of a mile past the first log cabin. Stop and park near two other collapsed log cabins on your left, another 1/10 of a mile.
Clues: From the northern most corner of the northern most collapsed log cabin, the one with 2 doorways (not the one closest to the creek), walk 50 steps at 20 degrees to a solitary tree stump about 3 feet high and about 18 inches in diameter. Look for letterbox at the base on the north side under wood debris and Strike Gold!
