The Hickory Greenway currently features a 1.5 mile paved path with 2.4 miles of adjoining "mountain bike"/hiking trails. Hickory City Park and Geitner Park are linked by the paved bike path. The park also includes: Picnic shelter with tables and grill, gazebo, walking, fitness, bikeway, nature trails, boat dock and ramp, fishing pier and restrooms.
Start your search at John "Bud" Geitner-Rotary Park located at 2035 12th Street Drive in Northwest Hickory. Facing the picnic shelter from the parking lot, locate the trail that starts at the right, rear corner of the picnic shelter (another trail starts at the left rear). Follow this slightly rugged trail which will closely hug the shoreline. About 900 feet along the trail you'll come to a rough wooden park bench with a nice view of the lake. The letterbox is about 35 strides(70 feet) up the hill behind you at a compass bearing of 120 degrees. It's in sealed, lock n' lock box covered in camouflage paint and located in the hollow below a rotted stump.
This is a hybrid, log-only geocache too, so besides the stamp and logbook there's a separate log for geocachers who may also hunt for this box. You can check out the geocache page at: http://tinylink.com/?rdlXvD53im
8/8/2006 I got a report that the old container was missing. Sure enough, no sign of it. It's possible that it was exposed due to some storm damage in the area. I've made a new stamp and replaced the cache. So, if you found it missing, hope you'll try again.
1/24/2005 Checked on the letterbox today and replaced the container (broken latch) and inkpad.
