What we have here is my very first letterbox ever, so I wanted to make it a little special and place it somewhere that not everyone and their mom will end up! Thus, Cooper Spur. I have wanted to start placing my own boxes for quite some time now, and when the idea finally came to fruition, all I could think of was to celebrate my favorite holiday. Voila! Zombie's Halloween Hikes are born; each stamp in the series representing something from my favorite night of celebration. As stated, this was my first stamp and is no masterpiece to be sure, but I think that this hike has such wonderful rewards at the end, that my stamp will hardly rank amongst them.

First things first, this one is a pretty decent workout. You will leave the trailhead (located in the Cloud Cap Campground) at around 5,500' elevation. After about 3.5 miles of steady climbing, you will find this letterbox (and the best view in Northern Oregon short of the summit itself) at around 8,700'. You can go a tad further and hit the 9,000' mark, but at this point the trail is gone and its glacier only the rest of the way to the top. You will simply not believe the views from up here; everything from St. Helens to Rainier to Adams to Jefferson and the Three Sisters.

LETTERBOX CLUE:

When you reach the summit of Cooper Spur, you will find a tribute to fallen climbers attached to a lone giant. Nestled under the Northern side of this isolated mammoth, behind some carefully placed stones is your reward.

DIRECTIONS:

FROM PORTLAND: Follow HWY 26 East from I-205 and turn north onto OR 35 (towards Hood River). Continue 17 miles and turn left at the sign for Cooper Spur Ski Area. Proceed 2.4 miles and turn left again at a second sign for the ski area. After another 1.4 miles you will stay straight and leave the pavement onto a bumpy dirt road (supposed to be gravel but it is fairly worn out), which you will follow for 8.3 miles to a "T" junction. Turn right here and travel .5 miles to the trailhead on your right. SHould take you about 2 hours.

FROM HOOD RIVER: Take OR 35 South for 22.4 miles and turn right at the sign for Cooper Spur Ski Area.

TIPS:

Bring warm clothes for this one as the weather has a nasty habit of turning sour very fast. Most of the trail is going to challenge you in one way or another; whether it is sand-like footing, tricky snow crossings, or just the relentless uphill climb. Basically, you probably won't want this to be your first hike. Getting to the top should be possible from July to mid-October.

Being my first box, I would love an email from the first person to find it, and welcome anyone else with comments or concerns!
