State - Washington
County - King
Town - Redmond

Number of boxes: 4

Clues - Easy. Straight forward directions. (Compass is useful)

Distance - Approximately 3 miles (round trip)

Time to complete - 1.5 to 2 hours

Trek - Easy. Typical dirt hiking path, with manageable inclines.

Weather Factors - Muddy and slippery in places when wet.

Kids and Dogs - No dogs, sorry. Good hike for kids.

NOTES:
This lush mixed forest of deciduous and coniferous trees was logged about 100 years ago. The noise of birds and frogs dominates the forest, and the preserve's many beavers have constructed several ponds. Coyote, deer, black bear, pileated woodpeckers, wood ducks and many other species of birds have also been seen in the preserve.

Restrooms, water-fountain and picnic tables near parking area. No pets are permitted (except guide dogs). Horses and bikes permitted on designated trails. Park closes at dusk.

DIRECTIONS:
Take Highway 520 to its eastern terminus, as it empties out into the town of Redmond to become Avondale Road. Turn right in 1.25 miles onto Novelty Hill Road. In 2.4 miles, turn left into the park across from 218th Avenue Northeast.

Special Note: The adhesive I used on the stamps seems to have left a strong 'rubber cement smell'. You may notice it when you first open the boxes.

Fire Elemental:

Begin at the "Connector Trail" sign at the NW end of the parking lot. Follow the trail North. Very soon you'll come to a crossroads under some power lines. Go straight thru the intersection to the No Bicycles sign. From the sign take 4 paces North (2 steps = 1 pace). Look to your right to see a large multi trunked tree. You'll find the Fire Elemental box on the north side of the tree somewhere around knee height.

Earth Elemental:

Continue North (330º) along the trail. You'll travel a long distance. Eventually you'll reach another crossroads with a split log bench. Have a seat and wait 'till the coast is clear. Locate 90º and take 14 paces and stop. On your left you should see a stump. The Earth Elemental is hidden behind it.

Air Elemental:

Continue along the trail (30º) taking the left fork from the bench (not the Pipeline Connection trail). Again you'll go a long distance. Along the way you'll cross several foot bridges. Eventually you'll come to a very strange clearing. You'll know if by marker "C3NW". Follow the trail around a U bend thru the clearing and back into the trees. Very shortly after re-entering the trees you'll find a nice sitting log on your right. Look for the Air Elemental behind this log under some bark.

Water Elemental:

Once again continue along the trail. Shortly, you'll come to another crossroads with signs. Follow the "Old Pond Trail" to the SW for approximately half a mile. You'll come to a nice bridge with railings on both sides. There's be a sign here reading: "Leaving Redmond Watershed Preserve". Cross the bridge and then take 30 more paces. You will be next to some fallen wood. Locate the overgrown log on the left. The Water Elemental is hidden on the SW side, under a piece of wood.

Now turn back the way you came, and backtrack back to the parking area.
