THIS BOX HAS BEEN RETIRED as of 5-24-09. See LOVE THE WORLD for new box at this location.

Wendell Willkie was born in Elwood, Indiana, in 1892. He graduated from Indiana University in 1913. In 1940 the Republican Party chose Willkie as their presidential candidate. Franklin D. Roosevelt beat him by 27,244,160 votes to 22,305,198. In 1943 Willkie published his book One World where he called for a post-war world which was a union of free nations. The book, which was a best seller, laid the groundwork for the United Nations. He followed this with An American Program (1944). Wendell Willkie died of a coronary thrombosis, on 8th October, 1944 and is buried in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville, Indiana.

East Hill Cemetery is on SR 44 just east of Rushville. It is open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Follow the signs to the gravesite, park and walk up the little hill. With your back to the big book and cross, look south between the rows of headstones directly across the road. In the distance you will see a big tree that branches off about 6’ above the ground. You will walk down the path, cross the road, walk between the headstones, cross the road again, about 120 paces (one step) in all. On the far side of that tree next to the Conners, carefully reach into the cleft of the tree under some loose bark and retrieve the box. It’s a pleasant place to sit and enjoy your stamping experience.
