********Box has been put back into service 4/8/05*********

Almost everyone is fascinated by those big electricity-generating windmills, and Madison county is home to the largest 'wind farm' in the Northeast....23 of the biggest wind-turbines made line the crest of a ridge in the Town of Fenner S. of Canastota, and you can see 18 of them at one time when you reach your destination!

The box is a relatively easy park-and-find, with one compass heading. Comfortable walking shoes will make the quest more enjoyable; watch your footing, as your destination lies near the edge of an old 10-ft deep sinkhole.

Your route begins as you leave the NYS Thruway at the Canastota exit. Turn left and travel South all the way through the village of Canastota. Just south of 'town' Rte. 13 joins Rte. 5 at a 4-way stop light. The road you're on as you face the light becomes Oxbow Road as you continue south. Travel further on it for 5.0 miles to Mile Strip Rd. Turn right on Mile Strip, being sure to bear to the right at the stop sign @ 1/3 mile down. Continue more or less West on Mile Strip Rd. for a total of 1.7 miles. As the road climbs up the ridge, an unmarked paved road intersects it from the left at the top of the ridge. Turn left here, and immediately after turning you will see a sizeable graded gravel area on the right where you should pull off and park.

Cross the road from where you parked, and walk down to where a chain gate hangs between two sets of wooden posts, framing a beautiful view of one of those windmills across a field. Standing with your back to the center of that chain gate, take a compass heading of 300 degrees back across the road. At that heading you will see a small storm-damaged tree with a scar at eye level. What you seek lies hidden among rocks and brush at the near side of that tree. Be careful here, as you're near the edge of the old sink hole, and a mis-step could be uncomfortable. Enjoy the box and the area, and please replace the box securely among the stones, since this area is prone to heavy rains and wash-out. Cover well, as always.

You can make your trip here a 'twofer'(or even a "three-fer"!) by getting the directions to "Outstanding in Our Field", and "Champlain Battle at Nicholls Pond", both just a short distance from one another! Thank you for visiting our box, and please contact us at claymorz@dreamscape.com if it is damaged or missing.
