I stopped in to check on this box and found it with teeth matks straight through the box and right into the face of my dragon! *pout* So, it has been pulled for now. I will try to get it replanted before the season ends. ~Aljan

Aljan's Lost Lake Letterbox

This letterbox is available on a VERY seasonal basis! Keep in mind that mountain winters start in mid October and usually and don't end until late May or even mid June!

It is just over two miles round trip (the walking part, the drive is several miles to get to the trailhead) for both boxes. Driving to the trailhead is a lot of the adventure. The trail is on the easy side of moderate. Dogs and kids will love the trip although the littlest littles tend to get a bit tired on the way back.

This is a two box combination. There is not a journal in the first box but there is a stamp (It is a bit large – about 5 inches by 3 ½) and an ink pad. The second box is a proper one with a journal for stamping in and another stamp and ink pad that goes with the first one.

There are TWO SETS of driving directions, the first is for the more adventurous and the second is for the not so much. The first set is a beautiful drive and lots of fun but will take some time and requires a car with a bit of clearance (People make it in Subarus all the time). Using the second set of directions would make it much faster to get to the trailhead.

Driving directions #1: From US Hwy 34 turn West onto Grand County Rd 4 at around milepost 9.5. There is an old marina called Dillie Docks on the east side of the highway and a mini storage place on the west side. Set your trip odometer to zero. Stay on the pavement (it will turn to dirt at around 1.9). Most of the trip will be spent on a dirt road but it is by no means four wheeling, you can take pretty much any type of car. When you pass through the large Idleglen parking area stay to the left – towards Stillwater Pass. Stay on the well traveled route, I know, it goes against the very fabric of your being but step off the moral high ground in the name of a really cool stamp. At about 8.5 go straight, again staying on Stillwater Pass and go through the forest service gate. At 10.7 stay right, still on Stillwater Pass. Wind down to 16.7 and turn right for the well marked Lost Lake trailhead.

Driving directions #2: From GRANBY travel west approximately 2 miles on Hwy 40 to Highway 125. Take Hwy 125 north for about 17 miles and turn right onto a well maintained dirt road (there is a sign for Stillwater Pass or CR 4). Travel about 5.7 miles until you get to the well marked turn off for Lost Lake on the left side of the road.

Now for the good stuff. It is a tiny bit over 1 mile to Lost Lake. Each split in the trail is clearly marked. You are almost there when you pass through the cut out section of a huge dead tree. Crest the hill to view the hoarded jewel, Lost Lake. Go left and skirt along the shore. Duck under a bare dead pine that points straight out over the water. Step over two that have fallen and continue along the lake’s shore. When the trail turns along the rocks away from the water start looking up the hill and to your left for a MASSIVE fir – at least 4 ½ feet across at the base. A stately ancient. On the backside of that tree, under some junipers and accompanied by a rock, your first box of the day waits.

Either continue on around the lake or backtrack and go right from where you started to the rock field that you would come to first if you had gone right in the beginning. …Looking straight across the lake from the first box’s location you will see the rock field there plainly. Make your way underhill or overhill to the large dead tree that stands alone in the rock field just below a huge rock. From the base of that tree, looking up the hill, take four steps along the rock face. A crevice is formed by the large rock and another that juts up to the left of it. Between these two and just behind a raspberry bush your second box waits under a rounded boulder resting in the crevice. There are some instructions in the second box that will help you put the two stamps together. As always, please be discreet when stamping in and rehide the boxes (particularly the second one) well.
