Reimert Memorial Bird Sanctuary

June 9, 2009
Note: received a second message that box #2 (Reimert Memorial Bird Sanctuary Box) is missing. Therefore I am officially labeling this one MIA. I'll see about replacing it when time permits. Thanks. Raindear

This was a joint planting effort by Team Lightnin' Bug and Raindear.

The Reimert Memorial Bird Sanctuary is the smallest parcel owned by the Wildlands Conservatory, a haven to birds, geocachers and now letterboxers.

Directions to the Sanctuary: Take Route 100 through Macungie. If northbound, turn left onto S. Church St. (towards Bear Creek Ski Area). If southbound, turn right onto S. Church St. (towards Bear Creek Ski Area). Go one mile to an entrance on left. Limited parking in front of gate, some more behind in a grassy area.

Although I would not label this "challenging" you may find the walk hilly and a wee bit rocky. Just plan for it.

You will want to do your homework ahead of time. There is a plaque at the trail head. You will need to use it extensively to figure out where the second box is. You can wait until you get there to decode the clues, but it might be easier to do in the comfort of your kitchen.
I will give you only one hint: Geocaching is for the birds.

Wildlands Letterbox

Begin at the Parking Lot, taking time to look at the dedication plaque. Begin on the white blazed trail, taking time see when the sanctuary was built and who built it (hint – BSA). After about 1/4 mile uphill, the trail will split; so take the right hand branch. You will continue to climb. When your climbing is complete, the trail will turn left. Keep a careful lookout on your right hand side for a V-tree with a snake passing through the angle. At it’s left base will be a long downed stump, while at it’s right will be a large rock. At the next white blazed tree, stand left shoulder to the blaze and take a reading of 3*(Troop #) – 5 and go 3-4 paces. Look behind and under rocks. Happy trails – LB…

Reimert Memorial Bird Haven Letterbox (Assumed MIA. Sorry)

There are 10 lines of text on the plaque.
Label them A through J. Within each line, number the letters from left to right, starting each row with #1.
