Easy
Terrain: Easy/Moderate Plan about 45-60 minutesdepending on how much poking around you do!

Directions: To reach Putney Mountain take exit 4 off I-91 in Vermont and drive north on Route 5 about 1 mile to the center of Putney. Take a left at the General Store onto Westminister West Road. Follow that road for 1.1 miles and then turn left onto west Mill Rd. and follow for 2.4 miles. Turn right onto Putney Mountain Rd. then immediately bear right at the fork. Go 2 miles and turn right into the parking lot for Putney mountain Trail Head. Go slow near the top so you don't miss the parking lot! Park all the way into the lot.

Get a trail map if there are any. This is a nice nature trail with stopping points along the way which are explained on the map.

Clues: The trail begins at the green rock. Take the trail to your left, the West Cliff Trail marked with yellow. Go to marker #3 and take a reading of 116* and look behind a 3 sister tree for the Pileated Woodpecker Box.

Continue on the trail to the Hawk Watch, enjoy the spectacular view. Find the only gold colored US Geological Survey marker and take a reading of 200* to find the Ridge Line Trail, marked in white. Follow this trail to marker #9. Take a reading of 171* and walk 40 ft. past the Elephant Tree. Take another reading of 97* and go 23 ft. to the rock outcrop to find the Elephant Tree Box.

Continue down the white trail back to the parking lot! Hope you enjoyed the hike!

We came across this spot while up in VT camping in July. We were on this very steep back road (coming from the opposite direction as the clues) and I saw the sign for the Trailhead and thought what a great spot for a letterbox! We started down the mountain and I suddenly remembered something, I opened my book of clues and back we went to look for the hawk Watch LB! I completely forgot that the box had been reported missing! Of course we didn't find it! But what a great place for boxes, So we planted these so you can enjoy this mountain too!
