**February 2006: Still safe and sound!

Gillespie Butte is named after Rev. Jacob Gillespie who was a pioneer settler of the Eugene area. Gillespie Butte park is unique for a couple reasons. It is one of a few Eugene parks that occupy a butte, and it is also adjacent to a historical cemetery. Gillespie Butte Park spans most of the butte, including the crest, while the tiny Gillespie Cemetery is located on the butte's north end.

When exploring Gillespie Butte, keep in mind that homes and private property cover the base of the butte itself. Signs are well-posted and trails well-worn, so it's pretty obvious where the park ends and backyards begin. Also, the box is NOT in the cemetery so don't go searching for it there. Of course, you are welcome to walk down after finding the box and pay your respects.

Turn onto Cal Young Road from Coburg Road, you'll be heading roughly west. You'll need to look for Debrick on your left. Follow Debrick until you see Crenshaw. Take a left on Crenshaw and head up to the butte. Park at the top, near the large boulder. Don't forget that parking brake!

At the entrance you will be greeted with signs and two main trails. The high road will take you to the top of the butte with breathtaking views of the city and ancient oak trees. The low road will take you down a lane lined with trees, and eventually to the cemetery. Both trails connect with each other on the north of the butte. If you're going for the box now, you want the low road.

Start down the low road and keep your eyes on the right-hand side of the trail. You will see a row of trees, and continue past them as you see a more barren area up ahead. Keep on the trail and you will soon see more trees on the right.

The first tree you see is small, but the second is larger and has a twin beside it. What you seek is under the second tree, well hidden under wood and moss in an anomoly in the hillside.

Enjoy!
