Adele, a very gentle, happy lady, enjoyed living in her home town of Sellwood. Born in 1873, she was the daughter of Sophia, a very rich and highly posed figure in society. Sophia was widowed at a young age and raised her daughter on her own. Money was never a problem, Adele’s father came from a long line of oil diggers, so when Adele was old enough to be on her own, her mother bought her a house at 1507 SE Spokane,in Sellwood, not far from Sophia’s home. It still stands today, and you can find it easily, as it is one of very few lavender houses. Not feeling as her mother did about money or politics, she lost herself in her garden. Her garden was her life, she felt no need to marry or have children, she was happy with the simple things in life. Adele loved to grow her own fruits and vegetables. Her house was always overflowing with flowers and vines growing everywhere. She loved to grow something she could really enjoy from just a mere seed. She grew anything that she could, but her favorite was growing Lemons………she loved lemons, and always made her own lemonade. Everyone in the town knew of Adele’s lemonade, just sweet enough, not too tart….oh can’t you just taste it now?

As Adele grew older, not a season went by that she didn’t have a wonderful lemon harvest, making her tasty lemonade. She would be seen everyday walking the beautiful tree lined streets, sipping on her lemonade. Down Spokane Street, she would be off walking, down to the waterfront. We know it today as Sellwood Riverfront Park. She would walk along the path as close to the river as she could, even with the dirt paths, she didn’t care , she loved to walk and enjoy nature. She would walk along and sit on her favorite log right along the river. Then she would walk on alittle further to her favorite tree, the biggest lemon tree she had ever grown, 2 had fallen over the path but this big tree lived on, but sadly Adele passed on. You can find her at the base of her favorite big, “lemon tree”, near the river, under logs, wood and brush. Here’s to her Lemonade!!!
