Holland Glen Letterbox
Note: DarkPaisley replaced this letterbox in November 2008.
We found it in good shape on 8/1/10.
Belchertown, MA (Hampshire County)
Location: Off MA 9 between Belchertown and Amherst
Date Placed: 9/11/04, by The L Troop
Time: 30 minutes round trip
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate, with a short section of a moderately steep and craggy trail. Slippery when wet, also.
Directions to Starting Location from Belchertown: From the intersection of MA 9 and US 202 in Belchertown, head west on MA 9 2.7 miles to the parking area on the right shoulder of the road.
Directions to Starting Location from Amherst: From the intersection of MA 116 and MA 9 in Amherst, take MA 9 east 6.0 miles to the parking area on the left shoulder. It is also .9 miles past the intersection with Gulf Rd. Be careful, this is near a blind curve in the road.
You should see a small blue “Drinking Water Supply” sign on one end of the parking area, and nearby white painted blazes that denote the Metacomet-Monadnock (M&M) Trail .
Clues: Follow the M&M Trail into the woods near a large cut tree. Hop Brook will soon be on your right. In a couple of minutes, the trail crosses the brook on rocks (careful!). Some tumbling water will appear on the left, and the trail starts to get craggy along the bank. Where the M&M Trail bears to the right steeply uphill, stand between two birch trees on the bank (one with a white blaze). Look up the hill where the trail follows the cliff top, and note a fallen tree at the top of the hill to the right of the trail. The Holland Glen Letterbox is hidden in/under one of the rocks below that tree. Again, be careful! Return the way you came, and consider doing the Wentworth Conservation Area Letterbox across the street from the parking area, if you haven’t already done so.
