Washington, Kentucky

Bring ink pad and pen.

One of the greatest frontiersmen to roam the Northwest Territory. Simon Kenton was born in Virginia in 1755. He moved west to explore the frontier of the Ohio territory and Kentucky. Particularly Kenton sought after the fertile, but hidden “cane lands” that were described to him by an old explorer. During his travels through the Northwest Territory, Kenton was captured by the Shawnee Indians and forced to march the deadly gauntlet nine times. (Most men died on the first one). Simon Kenton was also credited to have saved the life of another famous frontiersman, his good friend Daniel Boone. Kenton finally found the cane lands and settled a homestead there. This is were I have placed my letterbox, on property that was once owned by Simon. Be sure to stop by Old Washington to check out some original log cabins and see the town that Simon started.

Directions: Locate the Washington Baptist Church Cemetery at Washington, Ky, south of Maysville on U.S. 68.

Clues: Locate the historical marker near the reconstructed log chapel just of U.S. 68, west of town. Standing on the north side of the marker, take a compass reading of 346 degrees and go 11 paces (1 pace = 2 steps) to the revolutionary war memorial and flag. Now go 4 paces at 100 degrees, just don’t go over the wall. Follow the wall due north till it ends at the edge of the brush. Look in the top of a rotten fence post near the end of the stone wall. Rehide well. Email me and let me know how Simon is.
