****PRESUMED LOST DURING HURRICANE IKE. UNABLE TO CONFIRM WHETHER BOX WAS RETRIEVED PRIOR TO SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO LOCATION*****

Alive and wet 17 JUN 2005.

Texas A&M Galveston (TAMUG) began operation as part of The Texas A&M University System in 1962. The campus serves as an "ocean-oriented campus" of Texas A&M University, specializing in majors in sciences, business, engineering, and transportation.

To get to TAMUG: Take I-45 south to Galveston Island. Exit Harborside or continue on I-45 (becomes Broadway). Turn left on 51st Street and continue over the drawbridge to Pelican Island. TAMUG is on your right.

To find the box: Drive or walk around the campus. Only use sidewalks for walking -- it is an Aggie tradition -- but on TAMUG's campus the tradition is much more practical, as walking across the grass will bring up hoards of mosquitos! (You may wish to bring mosquito repellant anyway.) Get to the parking lot between the engineering building and the Texas Clipper II (TAMUG's training ship). From this parking lot, find the hiking trail which leads off to the right. You will pass between a palm tree on your right and a light pole on your left. Count 50 paces on the sidewalk to a hiking trail sign. Continue on the sidewalk past 5 benches on your right to another hiking trail sign. Turn left and walk across the grass hiking trail (yes, it's OK to walk on the grass here -- but no guarantees about mosquitos) to a small wooden footbridge, about 18 paces. Cross the foot bridge and continue on the trail 42 paces to another hiking trail sign. Go another 38 paces to another hiking trail sign, then 30 paces to the railroad bridge. Pass under this bridge and go to the third concrete ceiling beam on the next bridge. The letterbox is at the right end of this beam, on the shelf and hidden behind the beam. Please email me and let me know the status of this box.

Extra bonus for the First Finder: The Sea Aggie Mascot hitchhiker starts here. Please stamp the Sea Aggie stamp in the hitchhiker's book and take it to the next letterbox with you, stamping the book with the new letterbox's stamp and your own stamp, and leaving it safely with that letterbox.
