Alive and well 3 JUN 2005.

This cemetery, in Galveston, is comprised of 7 cemeteries, holds many victims of cholera and yellow fever, the city's founding fathers, slaves, and all manner of religion of Galveston's residents are buried here. Three hundred Confederate Veterans are buried here in unmarked graves in Old Potter's Cemetery (also called Yellow Fever Yard, named after the epidemic of 1846-1847). Many of the stones are extremely interesting and historical. The cemetery is located on Broadway between 40th Street and 43rd Street. Just go south on I-45. When you get onto Galveston Island, I-45 becomes Broadway. Keep going until you get to 43rd Street. Turn right and park near Avenue K or turn into the cemetery through the gates.

To find the microbox: proceed east on the main drive past the Hebrew Cemetery, Evergreen Cemetery, New City Cemetery, Oleander Cemetery, and on to the sign for the Old City Cemetery. Take your time and look at some of the mausoleums and headstones. Many graves are very old, dating back to 1840, and many statues, headstones, and mausoleums are quite interesting. Go to the last walkway on the right (south side of cemetery). Follow this walkway until you see the Willis mausoleum on a southwest corner and a large palm tree. Turn right and follow the walkway past the Willis mausoleum (heading west again) until you pass 6 palm trees on your right. You should be very near the end of this walkway, with a large Willis monolith in front of you. Look over your left shoulder and down, and read the metal historical sign just off the walkway. Face the Willis monolith again, and follow the walkway to your right. Find the place that the Masons are resting in Harmony. Hint: Look at the gravestones to your left. When you see a stone for Capt. A. R. Wier, who died in the Battle of Galveston, stop. A tall statue of a woman leaning on an anchor, with one finger pointing up, and the name of Davis on the base, will be ahead of you and to your right. Turn left, toward the fence, then right again to walk near the fence. Stop between the graves of Andrew Black and Ida Clark. Face the fence. The microbox is in the crotch of the tree, about hip high on an adult, covered by twigs and a small chunk of concrete. Please be discreet, and conceal the microbox well after stamping in. Please email me and let me know the status of this box.
