RING-DING-A-DING LETTERBOX SERIES

DIFFICULTY: Fairly easy. Just make sure your compass is working.
TERRAIN: Some paved path, some slightly hilly dirt motorbike trails.
TIME: 30-60 minutes.

Please note: I tried to check on these boxes in February 2008. The first box is still in good shape. There has been some significant terrain change heading to the second box, though, and I was unable to find it. (I didn't have the clues with me, though, so I may just have missed it.) Feel free to seek that box (it may still be there), but please know there's a good chance it's missing.

This series is planted in memory of Willard H. Markey, a member of my congregation who died in 2004. His legacy includes a park (wherein you’ll find these boxes), and a handbell company called Mallmark. I ring in the bell choir at my church; I ring bells and chimes that were made by Mr. Markey’s company. (G6 and A6, if you’re interested!) My wife especially loves when we ring "Carol of the Bells" around Christmastime, which she calls "Ring-Ding-A-Ding."

Willard H. Markey Centennial Park is located at 1418 Ridge Rd. (PA-563), Perkasie, about one mile south of PA-313, and about 2.5 miles north of PA-309. When you arrive, park in the first lot on your right.

BOX #1: HANDBELL
This one’s a quickie. Take the paved path at the south corner of the parking lot; this path bears a fairly sharp left from the parking lot. Shortly, a dirt trail veers off the path to the left. Take this trail.

At the T, go 60*. As you walk, look on your right for a long, dead tree a few yards into the woods. As you pass this tree, on your left will be a large, mottled tree. As you approach it, the bottom of this tree is somewhat dark, with a broad lighter stripe running around it. From this tree, continue on the trail 22 paces to find its twin. From this second tree, take a bearing of 130*. Walk 12 paces to a big two-trunk tree. Look in this tree for your handbell.

BOX #2: HAND CHIME
See note above.
Return to the trail, and continue in the direction you were going. You will find yourself at a paved path. Glance to the left to wave to your car, but turn right and walk down the path. Walk past the soccer field, and over a red bridge. The path will curve right, then left. Walk past the football field, and just when the path curves left again, stop. Look to your right, and you’ll see a mown path heading toward the woods. Get on that path. The mown path bears right, and then a dirt trail turns left into the woods. Take this trail. And get your compass hand ready.

At the Y, go 330* downhill.
At the Y, go 5*.
The trail will split around a small "island." Just after that, another Y...go 35*.
At the three-pronged Y (like a trident or psi), go 60*.
At the +, go 160* slightly uphill.
At the T, go 70*, and then 330*.
At the Y, go 320* for 24 paces.
Look for a tree that’s nearly a perfect “V” on your right. Look through it to see the tree where you’ll find your hand chime.

Now go and ring your new bell and chime! What lovely music.
