I have always wanted to plant a Sea Plane letterbox in the Great Swamp down by the old sea plane hanger on Worden’s Pond. After two years, I finally got my sea plane stamp carved and headed down to the hanger to plant the box. When I got there I was shocked to see two men taking the hanger apart. They told me that they were moving the entire hanger to the Richmond Airport to make a museum. The area around the site of the old hanger is really overgrown making no good spot for a letterbox anyway. So I planted the Sea Plane box a ways up the trail to remind people that there once was a sea plane and sea plane hanger in the Great Swamp. Bring clues for Laurette’s Adventure’s of Tin Tin letterbox and Wanda’s Holly Tree Impromptu letterbox as they are nearby.

This is a hunting area so mandatory florescent orange required October through end of February. Observe all local & posted regulations. Take proper precautions against disease carrying deer ticks and poison ivy.

Driving Directions: Take Rt 138 to West Kingston. Turn west onto Liberty Lane. Follow the road approximately 2 miles to parking area at end.

From parking area walk through the barway and follow the main trail. At first Y take a left. (Going right takes you to Katie’s Quest letterbox.) At power lines continue straight. You will soon reach a Y with the tree in the center. Walk into the woods behind the stone marker that says “George F. McGahey Memorial Trails.” There is a downed rotted tree behind the marker. The Sea Plane letterbox is at the end of this rotted tree under the roots. Please take box out from back (root) side of tree leaving the rock in front intact. Rehide carefully as this box can be seen from both sides. Go left to reach the Worden’s Pond, the site of the old sea plane hanger, and Laurette’s Adventure’s of Tin Tin letterbox or turn around and stay straight on main path to return to your car.
