Length: approximately half an hour, ½ of a mile
Terrain: Easy
Clues: Easy
Directions from I-90:
Take the RT-28 exit- exit number 30- toward HERKIMER/MOHAWK.
Turn RIGHT onto NY-28 N.
Turn LEFT onto S CAROLINE ST/NY-28. Continue to follow S CAROLINE ST.
Turn LEFT onto CHURCH ST.
Turn RIGHT onto W GERMAN ST/CR-245.
Turn LEFT onto LOU AMBERS DR. Watch out for deer. At the top of Lou Ambers Drive is Herkimer County Community College. Take a LEFT into the college parking lot. Drive to the far end of the parking lot, and park here.
To your left (facing the sports fields at the end of the parking lot) is a sidewalk that goes up a small rise and then follows along side the tennis courts. Follow this sidewalk past the tennis courts, the softball field on your right and the pond on your left. The path will turn left with a sign that says ‘Nature Center’. Follow this path.
You’ve now arrived at the Lloyd and Carol Bull Nature Center
Enter the woods and follow the trail down slope. You’ll cross two bridges and cross-country ski trails named the Inner and Outer Loops. Stay on the trail marked in yellow until you find the number 26. Take a compass bearing of 150. You’ll see triplets on your right and the fallen fourth on your left. From here, continue in the same direction 20 paces. A fallen tree blocks your path. Your prize is near.
These trails see a lot of traffic, so please re-hide the box well.
To return to your car, retrace your steps to #26. Cross the skunk bridge. The trail will loop back to your starting point. Follow the sidewalk back to the parking lot.
This is my first box.
