Where the heck are you going starting point:

State of confusion: Illinois
Property: Kane County Forest Preserve
Location: North of St.Charles, IL & South of South Elgin, IL on Route 31
New name: Jon J Duerr and boat launch
Former name: Blackhawk Forest Preserve
Along the Randall & Silver Glen Bike Trail.

Where the heck are you and where the heck are you going?

Once at the entrance of the Jon J Duerr Forest Preserve drive into the forest preserve and park at the parking lot nearest the river and next to the boat launch.

This is the starting point for your hike. You will soon be leaving the forest preserve. Once parked, get out of the car/vehicle and listen for the rumbling. You may not hear the rumbling. Conditions must be just right. You hear the rumbling mostly on nice weekends during the day. You will be going towards the rumbling. Are the rumblings Indian’s spirits, people complaining about the forest preserve name change, ghost train, lost lovers or other? You to may become part of the rumbling.

At this time you are at the Randall & Silver Glen bike trail and at the Fox River. The Randall & Silver Glen bike trail runs through the middle of the parking lot. Follow the bike trail blacktop up the river (compass reading on the trail approx. 80 degrees) and be careful you do not trip on the rock they place on the trail at the end of the parking lot. You will see his and her latrine on the left and picnic shelter on the right. A little further up the river on the right you will see a weird pipe through 2 trees that have been there for years. Trail dead ends onto the Fox River bike trail. Sign says “ S. Elgin 1.7” & “St. Charles 4.6.” See note below on return trip.

Turn right headed for St.Charles and the trail goes over the river. You have left the Jon J Duerr Forest Preserve. You will go over two bridges to cross the river. Immediately after you have crossed the second bridge there is a dirt trail to the right.

Take the dirt trail down stream along the river (compass reading on the dirt trail approx. 250 degrees). The river will be on the right. Stop at the 1st trail crossing.

At the trail crossing go left (compass reading on the new trail approx. 180 degrees). Trail leads away from the river. As you go up the trail you will come to a “Y”.

Follow the sign pointing to the “Nature Center” (Sign is missing)(compass reading on the trail approx. 220 degrees). You will go 68 paces if you are an Indian Chief or Medicine Man. If you are a fair Indian Maiden it may take you 95 paces. Watch for the cut end of a downed tree along the trail. This is a reference for the 1st secondary trail leading from the trail you are on.

You want to take this secondary trail to the right (compass reading on the new trail approx. 270 degrees). Shortly after you are on this trail you come to another trail.

Go left/straightish on the trail (compass reading on the new trail approx. 260 degrees). Trail goes over a large pipe (way to large to be use as a peace pipe) for drainage ditch. Immediately after you cross the large pipe you will come to another trail crossing.

There is a neat bulge (wart?) in the tree at eye level on the new trail. Turn left (compass reading on the new trail approx. 210 degrees) and take the trail up hill. This dirt trail turns to a grass trail. Continue up the grassy knoll till it “Ys”.

Take the trail to the left (compass reading on the new trail approx. 120 degrees). You will go past a big old oak tree on your right. Path turns from grass to wood chips with a bench to rest on and a split rail bridge to cross. Further up is an old house on the left, a newer home on the right. There you will find a blacktop path that leads to an information board.

Go to the information board. This will tell you where the heck you are. At the information board take the trail that leads towards the right.
Reference: Two trees at the information board are labeled. Go to the tree labeled Burr Oak, walk towards the tree labeled White Oak and then just keep on going. As you are walking you will come to a “T.” The “T” goes off on a dirt trail to the parking lot. Stay on the main trail (it is blacktop and a compass reading on the main trail is approx. 20 degrees). You will come to a bridge.

Stop at the plaque near the middle of the bridge. Facing the plaque turn left (compass reading on the bridge at the plaque face approx. 230 degrees). Look down and count 48 boards. Your treasure is under you. Be sure to look under the bridge and to your right. Need to look deep in the cement holes or to your right. There were some sticks placed in front of the box.

Note:
When we returned from placing the letter box the sign for the Randall & Silver Glen bike trail also stated the old Forest Preserve name of Blackhawk. So where the heck are you?
