Mt. Castor Letterbox

Amherst, MA (Hampshire County)

Location: Ken Cuddeback Trail , near Mt. Castor Conservation Area

Date Placed: 9/25/04, by The L Troop

Time: About 30 minutes round trip.

Difficulty: Easy

Directions to Starting Location: From the intersection of MA 9 and MA 116 in Amherst, head east on MA 9 (College St) to the next traffic light . Take a right onto South East St. Drive 1.5 miles and take a right onto Valley View Drive. Go straight at the intersection with Valley View Circle, and park in the cul de sac near the “Mt. Castor Marsh Conservation Area” sign. Valley View Drive can also be reached from Bay Rd via South East St, about 2.6 miles north from their intersection.

General Notes: The Ken Cuddeback (KC) Trail , marked with light blue blazes, traverses many interesting areas in South Amherst. You’ll be traveling out to the letterbox on the KC trail, with an option to return via another trail in the conservation area. Both trails have lots of bog bridges, and I would guess that the area would have lots of mosquitoes in May and June.

Clues: The KC trail continues past the sign and into the woods. Immediately, you will start crossing a series of bog bridges…..go straight and follow the blue blazes. After 10 minutes or so, you will approach a “T” junction. A short trip to the right here has a decent vista of a large field, but take a left at the T if you are in a hurry. Shortly after this turn, a yellow blazed trail will come in on the left…..continue on the blue (KC) trail. A sign will state that you are “leaving conservation land” . Cross a few more bog bridges and then the trail starts to ascend Mt. Castor. At the “summit” , continue a bit farther where the trail starts to descend again. Look on the left for a large white pine about 10 yards from the trail. The tree has two twisted trunks, and the letterbox is hidden at its base.

You can go back the way you came, or take that unnamed trail that you passed earlier, which will bring you back to the trail junction at the start of the hunt.
