Native Son #8-Thomas Pecorelli

(Leominster, Massachusetts)

Lincoln Woods Wildlife Sanctuary

Leominster, MA

Worcester County

Planted by David Besnia and Deanne Bellefeuille-Besnia

September 8, 2002

Clues: Easy

Terrain: Easy

From downtown Leominster (Monument Square) follow Rte 12 (Central Street) south. Just beyond the intersection of Rte12/Rte117, turn right off Rte 12 onto Union Street. The sanctuary is 0.7 miles ahead on the left, marked by a Massachusetts Audubon Society sign. Follow the driveway to a paved parking lot on the right. The trail you seek starts there. It starts off as a wide path through widely spaced trees. There are blue blazes on this trail. You will pass 2 wildlife refuge signs. After a short time the path narrows and goes downhill. You will pass over a dry streambed (at least it was dry when the box was planted!) As the path goes uphill again you will see signs of civilization ahead. Look on the left for a tall pine that is forked near the top. Stop by this tree and look into the woods on the right for a rock wall. Step off the path and walk about 35 steps to the wall. Look for a formation of 3 smaller rocks near an opening in the wall. Walk through the opening to a flat lichen covered rock and turn back facing the trail. Look under the base of the large rock on the left side of the opening to find Native Son #8, Thomas Pecorelli. Tom was a passenger on Flight 11, the first plane to hit the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. May he rest in peace.
