11/16/2008 -- NOTE: Because of an injury, we haven't been able to get out to our boxes this year. At least the first box of this one in particular may be missing, and the two boxes work best together, so even if the second is there, you might want to hold off on this one. We hope to maintain all our boxes in the spring. Until then, our apologies if they're not findable, or in bad condition. -- Ace + Lox

LOCATION: Arlington’s Great Meadows. Though the town of Arlington owns this conservation land, it is contained within the town of Lexington. For directions, go to your favorite mapping program (such as http://www.mapquest.com/directions), and where it asks for Address or Intersection, enter 739 Massachusetts Ave, Lexington. Park at the Waldorf School (at this address).

WALK INFO: The walk will take approximately 1 1/2 hours depending on clue-solving. This walk has one box containing the first half of the stamp image, but no logbook, followed by a regular box.

STAMP: Hand drawn & carved two-part stamp

BRING: Pen for working out clues

INFORMATION: Arlington’s Great Meadows is 185 acres featuring several habitats including a large meadow home to many nesting birds. Woodcocks are also a familiar sight beginning in early April each year. After a heavy rainfall many of the paths leading into the meadow can be quite wet.

CLUES: Go to the far left corner of the field behind the school, and cross the bike path. (Be sure to look both ways!) Pass the Arlington’s Great Meadows sign, and follow the trail to where you look out over the meadow. Count the white arrows on the three posts. (Note that one of them is scorched.) Record as CLUE A. _____

Take the trail that starts on the right and loops to the left in front of the meadow. After crossing a new, large boardwalk, the trail leads back into the woods. At the top of the first gravel incline, go left at the fork. At the top of the second gravel incline you will come to a 6-way intersection. Count the trails, counter-clockwise, with the path you’re on as 0. Take the trail numbered CLUE A.

Follow this trail to the T. You’ll be going right, but first go left to a post that has three letters on it. These letters correspond to a sequence of three turns you’ll be making later. Letters made up of straight lines, like L, mean you’ll go Left. Letters that have a curved line, like R, mean you’ll go Right. Record the three directions as CLUE B. Now go back through the T and continue. You'll cross over a second large boardwalk built by the Friends of Arlington's Great Meadows.

As you reenter the woods, stay to the left. At the next three opportunities make the three turns recorded in CLUE B. If you do this correctly, before too long, your trail will cross over a stone culvert. Continue until you come to a grassy, open area with a choice of three paths and a kiosk.

Take the middle path. At the next fork, stay to the left of the three-trunked oak. The path will cut through a stone wall. At the T, go left. Continue straight. Immediately after your trail forks to the left, you’ll see a row of stones. The first box is hidden under the fifth rock on the right. Rehide well, making sure the box is not visible from the path.

Continue down the path, keeping straight until you come to a T after the pond (which may be dry.) Go right. Then, stay to the right at the red-blazed rock. Continue through an intersection. You'll come back to the grassy area with the kiosk. Turn left. Shortly after passing a small trail on the right you'll come to a fork. Stay to the right where two yellow-blazed rocks are. This trail will eventually proceed slightly uphill. You will come to a flat area with 5 paths shooting off of it. Identify the 5 trails (but don't forget which one you came in on!). Count the trails, counter-clockwise, with the path you came in on as 0. Take the trail numbered CLUE A until it crosses a stone wall. The second box can be found on the left where two little trees touch the wall.

To get back: Return to the flat area and take the first trail on the left. Stay to the left, crossing back over the meadow, and then turn left. Follow this trail back to the 6-way intersection (don’t be fooled by the 5-way intersection immediately before it.) Using CLUE A, count clockwise to the trail you originally came in on. Go right at the fork and left at next fork to head back to the boardwalk. Follow the trail back to the three posts. Proceed back on the gravel path across the bike path (look both ways!) and back to where you started.
